Softness score
In this test we assess how soft the toilet paper is. This is a subjective assessment conducted by a panel of five people.
Disintegration test score
We time how quickly the toilet paper disintegrates. The faster, the better – you want your toilet paper to break up quickly as it moves through sewage, making it less likely to block pipes. The quickest takes under a minute to disintegrate while the longest takes 20 minutes to disintegrate.
Ply
Toilet paper generally ranges from 2 ply to 4 ply. This simply refers to the number of layers of paper used. Generally the higher the ply count, the thicker, softer, stronger and more absorbent the toilet paper should be.
Shop Ethical rating
Shop Ethical rates the environmental and social impact of the company (not the product) using independent sources. This rating is not included in our total score. N/A means there is no rating for that company.
Puncture test score
We assess the strength of the toilet paper by testing its resistance to puncturing. In this test a higher force is the most desirable result, meaning your finger is less likely to go through the paper.
Separation test score
We measure the ease of separating the toilet tissue at the perforation. The easier it is for toilet paper to tear, the better.
Biodegradable claim
PEFC Certified
FSC Certified
Made from recycled paper
Suitable for all toilet systems
This indicates whether a product specifically claims to be suitable for use with septic systems and composting toilets.
Packaging material
Is the packaging made of paper or plastic? Paper can go in your yellow bin and soft plastics can go to a soft plastics recycling scheme if you can find one, otherwise they go to landfill.
Availability
A Similar model is identical in most aspects except for a few. This means that a majority of its test results are identical so you can reasonably expect to get the same results from the model we tested, but for those aspects which aren't identical, we'll note these as "Not Tested" in the Compare tables.
A Tested model refers to a model that is still current and available in the Australian market. You should be able to order this model through your local retailer, or find it online.
These models can't be found in retailers or online or are no longer manufactured. You may still find them on second-hand websites, or in second-hand dealers. Test methods may change over time, so criteria which can't be directly compared will contain an N/A.
An Identical model is exactly that. Performance characteristics will be identical and the only difference will be something trivial such as colour, which won't have an impact on performance.
These are models we haven't yet tested but that are available.
