Reliability and satisfaction
For reliability and satisfaction we looked at an eight-year purchase period, 2013–2021.
- Bosch had both the highest reliability and owner satisfaction score.
- Miele scored higher out of the expensive brands (AEG, Asko) for both reliability and owner satisfaction.
- Bosch and Miele owners said their washing machine is reliable and washes well quietly. Some Miele owners like the short cycle option.
- Washer/dryer combos consistently get lower reliability scores than traditional top and front loaders.
Warranty and your consumer rights
The stated manufacturer's warranty is one of the things you'll likely consider when buying a washing machine.
The average stated manufacturer's warranty for all of the washing machines in this report is two years.
However, it's just as important to understand your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Your rights mean that you're entitled to a free repair, replacement or refund if your washing machine develops a major fault within the first few years.
Your rights still stand even if the manufacturer's warranty has expired and you didn't buy an extended warranty.
FAQ
In 2021 we surveyed more than 7000 people. We asked them about the performance and reliability of their washing machine over the past 12 months. We then cut the data down by selecting washing machines between 0–8 years old with a sample size of more than 50 people per brand, so we're more confident that our results match real-world experiences. Results were age standardised.
In our survey we asked people about their experience over the past 12 months, with a washing machine aged between 0–8 years old. To make sure the results aren't skewed by brands that may have recently come on the market, or who aren't making machines anymore, we weigh results to an average distribution across the eight years. That means brands are compared more evenly.
This information tells you whether a brand is well regarded by people surveyed about customer satisfaction and reliability. Alongside our expert test results, this data can help you choose the best washing machine for your needs.
