Fact-checked

Checked for accuracy by our qualified verifiers and subject experts. Find out more about fact-checking at CHOICE.

We test the latest electric bikes in our lab and out on the road so you can find the best performers that suit your budget.

Our experts look at:

  • pedal assistance
  • braking
  • turning and low speed performance
  • ride comfort
  • handling (including ease of mounting, dismounting, walking the bike, safety and comfort)
  • ease of using and accessing the controls
  • battery use (on-bike and off-bike).

Shopping links on the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳website

ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳is an independent, nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping consumers. Clicking a link will take you to a retailer's website to shop. While we make money if you buy through some retailer links, this doesn't influence any of our rankings. 100% of the money we make goes straight back into our nonprofit mission. We're currently testing this service and will consider providing more shopping links in the future. .

Why we chose to test these e-bike models

When we carried out our first e-bike test in early 2023, there was a lack of variety in the market (unlike now where there is a glut). We looked at what was available in retailers that we didn't have to wait for, and also what was popular. We'll continue to expand on the brands and types of e-bikes tested to reflect what you want to know about, with the latest update including a variety of other types, such as cargo and folding e-bikes.

We list important features and specifications for each model, as well as in-depth comments from our experts. Just want to know which e-bikes are best? Our Recommended list will show you at a glance which models come out on top.

Frame type

Expand to view more details.

Full frame means the bike has a cross bar you have to lift your leg over, while step through means the bike has no cross bar and it's easier to get on.

Max assist speed (km/h)

Expand to view more details.

This is a restricted setting to meet current Australian laws such as a continuous motor power of 200 watts (and 500 watts in NSW) with power assistance cutting out when a speed of 25km/h is reached. Any e-bike on test not meeting these restrictions can not earn a recommendation, regardless of it's performance in the test.

Expand to view more details.

Configurations vary considerably, so while we give the weight on some of the bikes, they'll vary based on how you order the bike with regards to size, frame option and battery size.
